My visit to Frackville Elementary!

Short -- but sweet. That's what my time at Frackville Elementary school was. This was the first weather-shortened day I've had in a school in the six years I've been doing school visits. So things had to be changed along the way. But in the time we had, some wonderful creative ideas came to life.

No, don't adjust your screen, and no, I didn't make a mistake while scanning this. This is just a very strange effect that happened by accident while someone was shooting pictures for me during the day.

Sometimes mistakes can be the best way to discover a new way of looking at things, or a new solution to a problem. The problem I'm trying to solve here is that this school has a policy against showing students on the web, even if they're not identified. (Regardless of what I might think about that, hey, rules are rules.)

So, imagine my delight when I get the film back and there's this cool, blurry effect! Problem solved! Anybody recognize themselves?

And just to show fair play, here I am blurry, too.

I know it's weird. I just like it. Hmmm, what does that say about me?

So, as the storm gathered outside the school, bright ideas were raining down on the inside!

Take for instance, the first assembly. How would you combine a bear that wants a fish, the moon, and a trouble-making moose into a story? Well, if it's a stretch for you, join the crowd. I wasn't sure what to do with it either, but managed to come up with a bear chasing a flying fish dinner to the moon. Hot on his heels is the fish and game warden moose insisting that flying fish aren't in season!

Then there's the older crowd that chose a skinny cat rescuing his horse from a forest dungeon. Little does he suspect the apple outlaw is about to attack! Good thing the cat isn't planing on having a late breakfast... you know, one bad apple can spoil the whole brunch.

We were only able to get two workshops in before students were sent home, but both were fast-paced and fun.

You Frackville students are good at imagining -- just like I thought you would be. I hope you had as much fun as I did! Keep up the good work!

Here's what teachers at Frackville wrote about my time at their school:
The assembly: The workshop:

"...keeps the kids attention, is interesting, funny and informative... a very good assembly and involves the children in his presentation."

"...your program gave students insight to seek the creative creature inside of them... and not be afraid to fail the first time they try something."

Read all my assembly reviews

“Bruce really related to the audience... he was able to model techniques and 'tips' for creating new stories and drawings."

"Mr. Van Patter has a great deal of energy and love for his work... many (students) came away believing more strongly in the power of their own imagination."
